Understanding the NC Family Caregiver Support Program

Caring for an aging loved one with dementia or chronic physical challenges can prove taxing. Sometimes it may feel overwhelming—especially if you rarely get a break.

The NC Family Caregiver Support Program was designed to help caregivers navigate these difficulties and improve their quality of life. In this post, we’ll look at who qualities, how to participate, and what types of support you can receive. We’ll also examine how companion care can form an integral part of your support system.

Eligibility

Unpaid individuals of age 18 or older who care for aging relatives, or for those with dementia, are eligible for the program. (Older relatives caring for children under age 18, and those caring for adults with disabilities, are also eligible.)

How to enroll? Look for a program in your area in this directory. Then, email or call the relevant program lead.

Support Provided

The Family Caregiver Support Program provides the following types of assistance to caregivers:

  • Counseling and access to support groups
  • Training in caregiving
  • Short-term respite care for loved ones
  • Assistance with understanding and accessing available services

The North Carolina Lifespan Respite Program provides a voucher for respite care services totaling up to $750. Caregivers can receive guidance in applying for this aid. Through counseling and support groups, they can also gain assistance in dealing with the emotional challenges of caring for a loved one.

The program doesn’t compensate caregivers for caring for their loved ones. However, it can help caregivers navigate resources that could connect them with payment opportunities, like the Home Care Independence program and the Community Alternatives Program. It can also help caregivers improve their own well-being through all of the above services.

The AARP lists additional resources tailored to caregivers in North Carolina. For instance, the Dementia Alliance of North Carolina provides education and guidance in accessing support for caregivers.

Integrating Home Care into Your Support System

In-home care can form a vital part of your support network. Tailored Home Care’s highly skilled home care aides provide much-needed relief when loved ones need consistent or round-the clock care and supervision. Plus, caregivers can take clients on outings and errands that keep them engaged in the community, transport them to appointments, or accompany them on walks through the neighborhood. All of this care provides a rich range of mental stimulation and physical activity.

You can schedule companion care around your needs, providing peace of mind while you’re focused on work or other family duties. Elder care can also cater to specialized needs. If your loved one requires memory care, partnering with a reputable home care agency like Tailored Home Care can help keep them safe and happy. Talk with your loved one’s care circle to discuss their specific needs.
